Second,
each of us must take his place as one who believes. Believing is not so much
work as it is rest, not so much activity as it is receiving, and not so much
what is immediately reaped as patience in the wait prior to obtaining. Faith is
waiting on God to provide in quiet confidence, something that every living
creature fathoms except man, who must learn it. Faith is enjoyable waiting and
easy resting. What makes it so enjoyable and easy, you might ask? We know that
God provides for what He has created. Does a branch have ulcers from worrying
about the care that the vine will give it? Never! It rests in its position,
trusting the responsibility of the vine and never trying to do its job! The
believer standing in faith will rest as a creature who does not take upon
himself the function of the Creator. Our second attitude, then, has to do with
faith. We understand that if abiding is dependent upon us it is impossible, but
we have courage for we have learned that it is God who keeps us.
